The dinner after an institutional milestone
On 3 December 2022, The British University in Egypt installed Professor Sir Magdi Yacoub as its inaugural Chancellor. After the university ceremony, BUE held a VIP dinner at JW Marriott Hotel Cairo and commissioned LOriental to create a ceremonial, palace-inspired dining environment for the occasion.
BUE placed the full guest-facing dinner environment under LOriental’s responsibility. LOriental designed and supplied the tablescape, seating, décor, tableware, glassware, printed menus and on-ground setup and management. JW Marriott supplied the food and beverages.
The brief: build a royal dinner from the table outward
BUE’s reference point was the visual language of a Buckingham-style palace table: formal, symmetrical and immediately distinct. LOriental built the dinner around one continuous table seating exactly 50 guests, with the table, seating and every place setting treated as one composition.
The single-table decision created the visual scale the brief needed. It also made repetition, spacing and proportion critical across the full length of the room, from the custom-made textiles to the place settings and floral rhythm.
Spatial & Tabletop Design
The focal point of the space was a single, custom-built continuous dining table draped in bespoke cream linen tailored precisely to its dimensions. To define the central axis, L’Oriental commissioned a bespoke burgundy runner featuring gold edging, crafted specifically for the event. This structural line was elevated by a continuous floral installation of rich burgundy, white, and lush green botanicals, interspersed with warm candlelight. To complete the immersive palette, guest seating featured custom-coordinated burgundy cushions, while each place setting was meticulously layered with gold chargers, gold-toned flatware, crystal-style glassware, decorative napkin rings, and personalized printed menus.
Designing one visual axis
The bespoke burgundy runner became the ceremonial spine of the composition. The continuous cream linen created a controlled formal base, while the gold edging connected the runner visually to the charger plates and cutlery. Flowers and candlelight repeated along the centre line, carrying one visual rhythm from one end of the table to the other.
The effect came from disciplined repetition across all 50 seats. The same gold place setting, glassware, chair treatment, printed menu and floral language repeated along the full length, giving the dinner the palace-inspired character BUE had requested.
A complete guest-facing setup around the hotel’s F&B
JW Marriott supplied the food and beverages for the dinner. LOriental supplied and controlled the guest-facing setup around them: the custom linen and runner, chairs and bespoke covers, charger plates, crockery, cutlery, glassware, napkins, printed menus, florals, candles and décor. The team installed the room before guest arrival and managed the designed environment on site.
This level of control was unusual within a five-star hotel setting, but it reflected BUE’s request for one coherent ceremonial concept from chair to tabletop.
A ceremonial setting built as one system
The finished room was intentionally formal and dramatic. Its impact came from scale, symmetry, material choices and the relationship between the table and the occasion. The 50-seat table carried the room, with every repeated detail reinforcing one continuous palace-inspired composition.
During setup, the installation drew attention from members of JW Marriott’s senior and food-and-beverage teams. The completed room delivered the transformation BUE had asked for: a ceremonial, palace-inspired VIP dinner with a fully bespoke visual identity.
Complete dining-environment design
The BUE dinner shows LOriental’s concept-to-execution capability beyond catering. The assignment required design, custom fabrication, sourcing, installation, serviceware, seating and on-ground management inside a five-star hotel, all aligned around a 50-seat royal-banquet reference.
JW Marriott’s contribution was the food and beverages. Every other guest-facing element of the dining environment was supplied, created or managed by LOriental, giving BUE one coherent concept from the continuous linen and bespoke chair covers to the printed menu at each place setting.
