A retail opening where the buffet had to belong to the store
OTTO Department Store opened at Citystars Mall on 5 July 2022 as a luxury retail destination built around fashion, beauty, accessories and premium international brands. LOriental was engaged to create the food presentation for the opening.
The challenge was to make the hospitality feel native to a fashion-led retail environment. Rather than import a conventional banquet setup, LOriental treated the buffet itself as part of the opening-day visual system.
Designing the buffet like retail merchandising
The buffet was built in layers rather than as a flat banquet line. Glass and mirrored platforms, black-and-gold OTTO-branded risers and cylindrical display pieces, and small black item cards created repeated brand cues inside the food presentation.
Black heat lamps cast a warm red-orange glow over selected sections, while dried and green foliage softened the glass, metal and mirrored geometry. Canapés were arranged in repeated rows, circles and vertical clusters so the food read almost like merchandise: grouped, ordered and deliberately staged.
A broad canapé spread with seafood as a visual anchor
Sushi, salmon, shrimp and caviar-accented bites were prominent, consistent with founder recollection. The photographs also show a broader finger-food spread: tartlets, pastry bites, skewered pieces and individual cup portions. The offer was varied, not seafood-only.
Abundance without turning the opening into a banquet
The buffet was intentionally generous. Large sushi arrangements, long runs of repeated canapés and multiple levels created visual abundance, but the food remained organized in compact bite-size formats suited to guests circulating through a store.
OTTO needed hospitality substantial enough to feel like an opening-day occasion without allowing catering to dominate the retail environment. The display held its own visually while the store, merchandise and launch remained the main event.
Brand fit was the operating decision
The defining decision was not to maximize scale; it was to make every visible element fit the brand. Portion format, display height, reflective materials, lighting, labels and repeated OTTO branding were coordinated so the buffet felt designed for this location rather than transferable to any venue.
The result functioned at once as catering and as an extension of the store’s visual merchandising: abundant, strongly branded and integrated into the environment without needing a separate decorative theme.
What this case demonstrates
The OTTO opening is a focused concept-to-execution case. LOriental translated a retail brand’s positioning into the physical language of hospitality: the food, its grouping, the display architecture, the lighting and the brand cues inside the buffet.
It expands LOriental’s launch portfolio into luxury retail and fashion, where visual consistency can matter as much as menu selection. The case is strongest as proof of branded food presentation, buffet architecture and retail-environment integration.
