Flat6Labs Demo Day at GEM: Turning a Startup Story into an Egyptian Apéro Dînatoire
An invite-only Demo Day for around 500 investors, founders and ecosystem guests, with an Egyptian-inspired menu designed to support presentations, circulation and networking rather than interrupt them.

The hospitality had to work around the reason everyone was there
Flat6Labs hired LOriental directly to cater its 2023 Cairo Demo Day at the Grand Egyptian Museum. The invite-only event brought together around 500 investors, partners and members of Egypt's startup ecosystem while 12 startups from the Flat6Labs Seed Program presented their businesses.
A formal seated meal would have pulled attention away from presentations and networking. LOriental therefore proposed an Egyptian-inspired Apéro Dînatoire: contemporary small-format food that guests could eat while continuing to move through the room and meet one another.
The menu followed the logic of a startup journey
The culinary concept was designed as a progression from idea to maturity. The opening food used simple, recognizable Egyptian ingredients in lighter formats. As the evening developed, the dishes became fuller and more substantial, before ending with dessert as the final expression of maturity and reward.
- Lentil gazpacho shooters with crispy shallot
- Koshari bites
- Beef fatta towers
- Rokak bouchée
- Alexandrian hawawshi sausage
- Mombar bonbon
- Chicken shawarma taco bites
- Konafa with butterscotch, dates and salted walnuts
The beverage direction followed the same brief, with Egyptian references including lavender-mint karkadeh, kamar el-din Bellini and tamarind agua fresca.
Egyptian without becoming nostalgic
The Grand Egyptian Museum setting made the cultural direction obvious, but it also created a risk: the hospitality could easily have become decorative or folkloric.
Instead, the food used recognizable Egyptian references in a current format that suited an event about founders, technology and new businesses. The setting informed the menu, but the event purpose still controlled the service.
Why the Apéro Dînatoire format worked
Demo Day depended on circulation. Founders were presenting. Investors were moving between conversations. Guests needed to eat without leaving the event flow.
Small-format service allowed hospitality to remain present throughout the evening without creating a separate dining programme. The food carried the event idea, but did not ask the room to stop for it.
A milestone at the Grand Egyptian Museum
Flat6Labs described the event as the first startup showcase held at the then-new Grand Egyptian Museum. For LOriental, it was also the company's first catering assignment at GEM.
The event became a reference point for later corporate and institutional work at the museum: begin with the programme, protect circulation and choose a service format that can carry a concept without slowing the guest journey.
Client feedback
“What stood out was how naturally the catering connected with the identity of the event. The menu was thoughtfully judged for the Demo Day format, the presentation was beautiful, and the Flat6Labs brand was woven into the experience in a subtle, elegant way. It felt considered from start to finish and worked seamlessly with the pace and energy of the evening.”

What this case proves
The Demo Day is one of LOriental's clearest examples of concept-led corporate catering. The menu reflected the identity of the event, the service format matched guest behaviour and the hospitality stayed secondary to the startups and conversations that brought the room together.
It also became the start of two continuing relationships: Flat6Labs returned to LOriental for later work, and the Grand Egyptian Museum became a recurring venue for LOriental's corporate and institutional events.
