A national-day menu that actually felt Canadian
For the Embassy’s 2025 Canada Day reception, LOriental was appointed directly to handle the full non-alcoholic food-and-beverage operation at the Official Residence in Zamalek. The brief called for more than a generic diplomatic reception menu. The food needed recognizable Canadian references while still working for a large standing event.
Before the event, Sherif Hussein and Nermine Zahwi spent roughly two hours tasting the proposed menu with H.E. Ulric Shannon, Ambassador of Canada to Egypt. The final selection included Canadian butter tarts, tourtière, maple-glazed chicken and pineapple skewers, and a live poutine and loaded-fries station.
Solving the cheese-curd problem
One detail became a practical test of authenticity. Traditional poutine depends on cheese curds, but the right product was not available locally in the quantity required. The Embassy solved the sourcing gap directly: Ambassador Shannon was travelling in Canada before the event and arranged to bring back the needed cheese curds.
The station offered classic poutine with fries, cheese curds and gravy, alongside loaded-fries variations. It gave guests a distinctly Canadian food experience that worked naturally within the flow of a large standing reception.
Brand identity carried through the service
The Canadian reference continued beyond the food. Waiters wore red ties, service trays carried Canada-themed visual cues, and the beverage presentation became part of the event identity. For the 2025 reception, LOriental used a digital-screen bar; for the 2026 edition, the presentation evolved to a mirror bar.
The Official Residence also gave the operation an unusually strong back-of-house advantage. A spacious, air-conditioned commercial-grade kitchen allowed the team to stage a 500-guest diplomatic reception with the control of a permanent kitchen rather than relying on a temporary prep setup.
The strongest proof came a year later
The Embassy invited LOriental to bid again for Canada Day 2026 and selected the company for a second consecutive reception. Rather than repeat the previous menu, LOriental developed a new selection for the second year. One item was deliberately retained: the Embassy specifically requested the return of the poutine station.
That repeat appointment is the central result of the case. The Embassy had already experienced the full process in 2025 — tasting, menu development, sourcing, setup, live-station service, beverage operation and guest delivery — and chose LOriental again for the following year.
When Canada Day continued into the World Cup
The 2026 reception was followed by a separate invited viewing of the Canada–Switzerland FIFA World Cup match at the Official Residence. With finger food and pass-around service still available, LOriental extended the catering operation through the match instead of closing at the original handover point.
That extension mattered operationally because the audience shifted while the event continued. Some guests remained from the national-day reception and others arrived specifically for the football gathering, so service had to continue smoothly without treating the second part of the evening as an entirely new setup.
What the relationship proves
Across the two Canada Day receptions, the evidence is broader than one successful menu. It shows culturally informed menu development, ingredient problem-solving, high-volume live-station execution, branded service presentation, full non-alcoholic beverage management and the consistency required to earn repeat work from the same embassy.
The relationship also became part of a wider diplomatic referral network for LOriental, with later embassy work emerging after other missions experienced or learned about the service. For diplomatic hospitality, that kind of repeat and referral behaviour is more meaningful than a generic claim of premium service.
